Grimdark Future

Grimdark Future

Thoughts on a new miniatures game I've been playing recently.

Lately I've been wanting to play some miniatures games and with limiting contact with people I've had to schedule a play day or two with a friend or two. Unfortunately one doesn't know the rules to Warhammer 40,000 and the other adamantly refuses to learn them. Which brings me to Grimdark Future.

"Grimdark Future is a single-page miniatures game set in a war-torn sci-fi future, designed to be easy to learn but hard to master. The game is played with 30-40 models per army, giving you big battles that can be played in 60-90 minutes." - onepagerules.com

This is a decently accurate description but what it leave out is that you can play it with any models you like! If the website didn't give it away the core rules for this game can fit on a single double sided page. I've been using my Space Marines as the "Battle Brothers" and my opponent was using his T'au Empire as "Tao Coalition." If you know your 40K lore you can begin to see the connection between Grimdark Future and Warhammer 40,000.

The core game play is simple enough. Each round players alternate activating units to move and/or fight. Much of the appeal of this rule set comes from the simplicity of the model's stats. All models have two  main stats: Quality and Defense. Defense is pretty obvious, its used when your model takes damage in an attempt to avoid that damage. Quality on the other hand is used for everything else. Shooting? roll quality. Melee? roll quality. Moral? roll quality. This simplification breaks everything down into how well trained it is, and how good is its armor. This boiling down of statistics is wonderful for getting new players in as well as getting in a game quickly.

The simplicity of Grimdark Future combined with the scale that you can play at really draw me to it. Some may not like that its not as intricate as other games but something that is quick and lets me play with my toy soldiers is a game I can really get behind.
